Small business owners and managers

Independents' Day UK is campaign that independent retailers across sectors and throughout the country can use to promote their own businesses online and in their own communities. We call it a grassroots movement because it needs your active involvement and support. The campaign has been designed for independent retailers to use it and make it work for their own businesses. How can you do that?

•    Follow and engage with the campaign across our social media platforms.
•    Share news of the campaign taking place with fellow retailers and customers.
•    Download the Independents’ Day UK logo and share it on your website, on your own social platforms and in your shop windows to show that you are taking part.
•    If your business has a particular story to tell, get in touch so that we can tell your story.
•    Do something special for the Independents’ Day weekend, like a unique offer/promotion, product launch or event with another local business to bring people into your shop (particularly those who may not have visited before)

Shoppers

As a shopper Independents' Day UK is your chance to show some love for the independent retailers you value most both in your local communities and online: the ones you wouldn’t want to live without.

•    Follow and engage with the campaign across our social media platforms.

•    Give a shout-out on social media to the independent retailers you love and value most – be sure to tag us in any post using the hashtag #ukindieday.
•    Ask the independent retailers you visit or know if they are involved with Independents’ Day UK – if not, please direct them to our website.
•    Make a list now of one or two independent retailers that you’ve never visited before, or even local favourites you’re famililar with and pledge to spend some money with them on Independents’ Day weekend – your visit will make the world of difference.

BIDs and Local Authorities

Independents' Day UK is at its most effective when it is both a local and a national campaign. BID teams and local authorities around the country can use the campaign to both engage with retailers in their areas but also to promote their towns as independent retail destinations. It’s a campaign that is ready made for BIDs and local authorities to take and use for the commercial benefit of their town and its shops. How can you do that?

  • Actively promote the campaign to your local retailers, giving them ways to promote themselves to their existing and potential customers.

  • Become an official supporter of Independents’ Day to demonstrate to both local shop owners and shoppers your commitment to independent retail in your area (see below for more).

  • Leverage Independents’ Day to create a town-wide event or promotion to encourage local residents to come into the town and shop.

  • Get your local media involved to showcase some of the top independent retailers in your area – help them tell the story about why your location is so great for indies.

  • Download the Independents’ Day UK logo and posters and share it on your website, on your own social platforms and encourage your retailers to display it in their shop windows.

  • Contribute a blog for our website (we can then share it) on independent retail issues in your area and how you are successfully addressing them.

  • What makes your area a stand-out area for independent retail? Get in touch so that we can tell your story.

  • Follow, engage and mention the campaign across our and your own social media platforms.
